Introduction to Zen Training Weekend
with Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Danica Shoan Ankele, Gokan Bonebakker·Zen
Three-day introductory retreat for people new to Zen practice. You'll learn zazen, participate in liturgy and work practice, and meet with a teacher for a private interview.
About this retreat
This is a weekend sesshin built specifically for people encountering Zen practice for the first time. Rather than jumping into a longer, more intensive retreat, you'll have a contained introduction to the core elements: seated meditation (zazen), the liturgical and communal side of practice, and work practice — which at many Zen centers means helping maintain the grounds and facilities as part of training itself.
The retreat includes a private interview with a teacher, a chance to experience directly what the teacher-student relationship looks like in Zen practice. This is often the moment newcomers understand what dokusan (the formal private meeting) is actually for — not consultation or therapy, but a direct encounter with someone who knows the tradition and can point to your own mind.
The center has not yet published the daily schedule, lodging details, or teacher assignment. Contact Zen Mountain Monastery directly for specifics on what times you'll sit, what meals are included, and where you'll sleep.
Schedules can change — confirm details on Zen Mountain Monastery's website.
