Ango Intensive (Online) – Turning Words and the Wellspring of Great Peace
Soto Zen
Three-day online intensive on turning words in Zen, studying Master Hongzhi's verses and practicing shikantaza (silent illumination). Participants engage with classical texts and develop their own teachings through writing.
About this retreat
Turning words — pithy statements or phrases that pivot a student's understanding — are central to Zen teaching. This retreat focuses on their role in practice and transmission, studying the work of Master Hongzhi Zhengjue (1091–1157), a foundational figure in the silent illumination (shikantazu) lineage of Soto Zen.
The format combines study of classical teaching verses with shikantazu practice and creative writing. Participants will work with Hongzhi's own words alongside their own emerging understanding, developing what the center calls "live words" — teachings that arise from direct practice. The retreat spans three days online; the center has not yet published the daily schedule, sitting period structure, or whether dokusan or group meetings are included.
This is an introductory retreat focused on a specific Zen theme rather than a full sesshin format. Prior experience with Zen practice or shikantazu is not mentioned as a requirement; contact Zen Mountain Monastery directly to confirm who may attend and what preparation, if any, is expected.
