Denkoe Sesshin
with Shusho·Soto Zen
Five-day Soto Zen sesshin centered on study of the Denkoroku, a classical Zen text of ancestor lineage. Described as quiet, formal, and rigorous. Participants may drop in by Zoom for early morning sessions or attend in person; evening practice is in-person only.
About this retreat
Denkoe Sesshin is Dharma Rain's annual retreat centered on a chapter of the Denkoroku, a foundational Zen text that records the lineage of awakened ancestors. The name signals the retreat's focus: honoring and studying transmission within the tradition. As a Soto Zen center, Dharma Rain practices the form of Zen Buddhism that emphasizes zazen (sitting meditation) as the primary expression of awakening.
The center describes this as one of their more quiet, formal, and rigorous sesshins — language that suggests a traditional structure and serious commitment to silence and practice. The exact schedule, daily rhythm, and what "quiet, formal" means in practice (meal style, dokusan availability, precise sitting periods) are not detailed in the published materials.
The retreat accommodates both online and in-person participation, though with limits: early morning practice can be joined by Zoom or in person; evening practice is in-person only. This hybrid structure is worth clarifying before registering — ask the center whether you can attend the full retreat online, or whether in-person attendance is expected for any portion.
Registration closes April 9. The center requires registration for meals and overnight stay but has not published pricing; see the registration form or contact the center for fee information.
