with Hogetsu Laurie Belzer · Soto Zen

Soto Zen sesshin zazen kinhin oryoki

Daylong sesshin led by Hogetsu Laurie Belzer marking the start of Ancient Dragon Zen Gate's Spring Practice Period. Saturday evening orientation and zazen, then full Sunday sitting 7 am–5:30 pm with oryoki lunch. Hybrid format: attend in person at the Lincoln Square Zendo or online. Partial attendance welcome.

Ancient Dragon Zen Gate marks its Spring Practice Period with a daylong sesshin led by Hogetsu Laurie Belzer. This is a full-day sitting that spans two calendar days: it begins Saturday evening at 7 pm with orientation and zazen, then continues Sunday morning from 7 am through 5:30 pm. The schedule follows traditional sesshin format — alternating periods of zazen (seated meditation) with kinhin (walking meditation) — punctuated by chanting the refuges and a midday oryoki-style lunch.

Format and attendance

  • Hybrid: sit in person at the Lincoln Square Zendo or join online
  • Partial attendance is welcome — you don't need to commit to the full event
  • No prior Practice Collective Program (PCP) registration required
  • If attending in person, full COVID-19 vaccination is required

What to know

The registration form asks whether you have an oryoki set (the formal eating bowls used in practice) and whether you'll need a chair for meditation. If you don't have oryoki experience, Ancient Dragon will work with you — this is a beginner-friendly center. Dietary restrictions can be noted during registration.

The suggested donation is $75, but a self-determined sliding scale is always welcome; payment can be made by credit card or check. Register by Monday, March 16.
