Fall Sesshin
with Peggy Metta Sheehan
Five-day silent sesshin at Zen Center of Denver, led by Peggy Metta Sheehan and Karin Ryuku Kempe. Intensive zazen practice with dokusan (private teaching interviews), teisho (formal talks), chanting, and oryoki-style meals. Traditional residential format.
Zen Center of Denver's fall sesshin follows a traditional five-day intensive format. The retreat runs from October 2 at 2:30 p.m. through October 7 at noon, giving practitioners a full immersion in structured practice without the time pressure of shorter sits.
The daily schedule centers on zazen (sitting meditation), with dokusan—private one-on-one meetings with the teachers—woven throughout. Teisho (formal dharma talks) provide instruction and context. Meals are served oryoki-style, a formal practice using bowls and utensils at the table as part of the meditative day. Chanting is included in the schedule. This is traditional sesshin format: silence maintained outside the zendo, structured timings, minimal free time.
The retreat is held at Zen Center of Denver's location on South Columbine Street in Denver. Arrive at least ten minutes early; doors lock five minutes before start time to preserve the silence. Wear comfortable, dark, quiet-colored clothes and avoid scent or perfume out of consideration for others. Parking in the neighborhood can be tight, so plan accordingly.
