Special Training Day: Doan and Zendo Etiquette
Soto Zen
One-day in-person training on zendo roles and etiquette, covering doan responsibilities, zendo conduct, and hands-on practice with service instruments and liturgical forms. Open to newcomers and regular practitioners.
About this retreat
This is a practical day focused on the mechanics and etiquette of sitting practice — useful whether you're new to a zendo or deepening your understanding of how a sitting hall functions. The doan role (the person who leads chanting and timing) is central to sesshin, and learning how it works demystifies what happens at the front of the room.
The day includes instruction on zendo etiquette — how to move, bow, and conduct yourself in the space — and hands-on practice with service instruments (bells, wooden blocks, incense) and the chants and forms that structure each sitting period. This is the kind of training that turns observation into participation.
