Step Into Your Life: A Zen Inspired Retreat

Soto Zen

Soto Zen residential silent zazen kinhin

Six-day residential retreat at Tassajara combining zazen, kinhin, Zen talks, and guided practices. Focuses on mindfulness, intuition, and emotional awareness as they relate to daily life and relationships. Open to all levels.

About this retreat

San Francisco Zen Center's Tassajara Monastery, nestled in a remote canyon in the Los Padres National Forest, is one of the oldest Zen monasteries in the West. This six-day retreat takes place in early summer at the monastery itself — a setting that becomes part of the practice. The surrounding redwoods and creek are as much part of the retreat environment as the zendo.

The retreat follows a traditional Soto Zen structure: zazen (sitting meditation) and kinhin (walking meditation) form the backbone of the day, interspersed with Zen talks and guided practices. Unlike silent sesshin focused purely on sitting, this retreat explicitly incorporates guided work on mindfulness, intuition, and emotions. The theme "Step Into Your Life" signals a deliberate bridge between formal practice and how awareness applies to relationships and daily choices — a softer entry point than some Zen retreats while maintaining the discipline of a residential format.

Participants stay on the monastery grounds in simple accommodations and eat together in the dining hall. Daily schedule typically runs from early morning (around 5 or 6 a.m.) through evening, with meals and rest built in. Noble silence is observed — no talking except during designated times. This is residential practice: you're there for the full duration, meals included, living in rhythm with the community and schedule.

Tassajara is accessible but remote — it's a drive into the mountains, not a day trip. That isolation is intentional. It creates a contained environment where the external world recedes and attention naturally settles. Bring layers for weather, practical clothes for sitting, and a willingness to move at the monastery's pace.
