Easy as Breathing: Wild Heart Writing for Women

Soto Zen

Soto Zen residential silent beginner-friendly writing

Five-day residential writing retreat at Green Gulch Farm combining silent meditation with timed writing exercises and prompts. Open to women of all writing levels. Designed to help writers bypass self-criticism and find their authentic voice in a supported group setting.

About this retreat

This retreat pairs the foundation of Zen practice—sitting meditation—with creative writing as a parallel path to clarity. Rather than treating writing as a separate skill, the retreat uses the same attention you'd bring to zazen (seated meditation): sustained focus, noticing without judgment, returning when the mind wanders. The timed writing exercises function like sitting bells—they structure the time and keep you moving past the inner voice that says this isn't good enough.

Green Gulch Farm, SFZC's coastal retreat center north of San Francisco, is designed for this kind of work. The setting—gardens, quiet mornings, a rhythm of meals and practice—creates the conditions where your own voice can emerge without the noise of daily life competing for attention.

The retreat runs five days, which is long enough to settle but short enough that you're not signing up for a full sesshin commitment. Expect a daily schedule that alternates between sitting meditation (following SFZC's Soto Zen format), writing sessions with prompts, meals, and free time. The writing itself happens in the same spirit as zazen: you're practicing showing up on the page, not perfecting prose.

This is residential, so you'll stay at Green Gulch. Meals are included and typically vegetarian. Plan on sleeping in a shared room or private room depending on availability and pricing tier.
