Saturday In Person One-Day Sitting
Soto Zen
One-day zazen sitting on Saturday, May 30, concluding SFZC's five-day Spring Practice Period. Full schedule includes zazen, kinhin, dharma talk, and oryoki. Participants commit to the complete day.
About this retreat
San Francisco Zen Center's one-day Saturday sittings are structured around their ongoing practice schedule rather than designed as introductory events. This particular day concludes the five-day Spring Practice Period, so the energy and instruction are shaped by that context — you're joining a cohort mid-arc, not starting fresh.
The day follows traditional sesshin format: periods of zazen (sitting meditation) alternating with kinhin (walking meditation), a dharma talk, and oryoki (formal eating practice). If you're unfamiliar with oryoki — the ritualized way of eating meals in silence using nested bowls — expect to learn it on the spot. SFZC is known for taking these formal practices seriously; they're not decoration but central to how the retreat works.
A one-day sit is a solid container if you have steady sitting practice already. It's not a sampler or a talking retreat — the commitment is to the full schedule, which typically runs from early morning through afternoon. If you're new to sitting, consider attending one of SFZC's introductory workshops first, or ask the center directly about preparation.
