Just Sitting Retreat - Spring 2026

silent residential zazen beginner-friendly

Seven-night silent retreat centered on sitting practice, with no talks, interviews, or structured activities. Participants practice according to their own needs within a framework of silence and community, supported by vegetarian meals and a simple schedule. Prior multi-day retreat experience required.

This is a retreat stripped to essentials: sitting, silence, meals, sleep. There are no dharma talks, no dokusan, no work periods, no structured schedule beyond sitting times. The retreat organizers call silence and sitting "the bones" — everything else is optional, to be practiced as you see fit. You can walk, rest, watch birds, observe plants, or sit continuously. The framing is unusually permissive for a silent retreat, emphasizing self-direction within a container of community silence.

The guiding principles — tranquility, harmony, respect — apply both internally (to your own practice) and externally (to how you move and act around others). This signals a retreat that trusts participants to self-regulate and practice with maturity.

Single rooms are standard unless you arrange otherwise. The cost is fixed at $763 for the full seven nights. If expense is a barrier, contact Lee Lewis directly; the retreat acknowledges economic hardship explicitly. Vegetarian meals are provided; space is limited.

This retreat is designed for people who already know multi-day sitting — whether sesshin-trained or experienced with other intensive retreat formats. It's not introductory.

Full details from Hokyoji Zen Practice Community

Please join us in a retreat of mindful meditation within an environment of deep silence and community. A sitting schedule and silence are the bones of the retreat. The principles guiding the retreat are tranquility, harmony and respect. These principles apply to both ourselves (internally) and to others (externally) through our actions. There are no services, dharma talks, interviews with a teacher or work periods. Meals, silence, sitting and sleep are the support for our individual and collective practice. That said, participants are free to practice as they see fit augmenting their day with walks, naps, bird watching, botanizing, looking…meeting one’s needs mindfully as retreat activity.

All participants should have experience sitting multi-day mindfulness retreats or sesshins.

Cost: $763/person. Single occupancy, unless otherwise arranged. Contact Lee Lewis ([email protected]) if the cost poses an economic hardship.

Space is limited. Vegetarian meals. Full retreat (6+ days/7nights).
