with Joanna Rosenfeld

in-personday-sit

Three-day in-person workshop in butoh—a Japanese form of dance-theatre that emphasizes slow, deliberate movement and internal sensation. Led by Joanna Rosenfeld, the retreat explores thresholds between impulse and action, self and other, touch and distance through movement practice and sensory work. Open to performers, dancers, actors, and people with no prior butoh experience.

About this retreat

Butoh is a Japanese form of dance-theatre that emerged in the 1950s, known for its emphasis on slow, precise movement, internal sensation, and often stark or unsettling imagery. This three-day immersion with Joanna Rosenfeld focuses on the space between—between impulse and action, self and other, touch and distance, control and surrender, and stillness and transformation. The retreat draws on butoh's core practices: sensory awakening and relational movement work that invites you to notice what moves you and how you move with others.

The workshop is held at San Francisco Zen Center's City Center location and welcomes performers, movers, dancers, actors, and curious people entirely new to butoh. No previous dance or butoh experience is required.
