Beginners' Half-Day Sitting
Soto Zen
Half-day introduction to zazen and kinhin for people new to meditation. Instruction, practice periods, and discussion with the teacher.
About this retreat
This is a half-day sitting designed for people coming to zazen for the first time. You'll learn the basics of posture and breath in sitting meditation (zazen) and walking meditation (kinhin), then alternate between practice periods and conversation with a teacher who can answer questions as they arise.
Green Gulch and City Center are part of the San Francisco Zen Center, which teaches in the Soto Zen tradition — a school that emphasizes zazen itself as the whole of practice, rather than using sitting as a means to an end. A half-day format gives you a real taste of what sitting feels like without the commitment of a full sesshin.
