Zazenkai (All-Day Sit)

Boundless Way Zen

Boundless Way Zen day-sit silent zazen kinhin

All-day silent zazen sit at August Farm, featuring alternating periods of seated practice and kinhin (walking meditation) with a brief woodland walk in the afternoon. Open to all levels.

About this retreat

A Zazenkai is a half- or full-day sit — a chance to practice zazen (Zen sitting meditation) without the time commitment of a multi-day sesshin. This one runs the full day at August Farm, a retreat space that gives you the rhythm of formal practice without overnight lodging or meals to navigate.

What to expect

The day alternates between zazen (sitting) and kinhin (walking meditation outdoors), breaking the sitting periods with movement. The afternoon includes a woodland walk — enough to reset your legs and clear your head without leaving the grounds. There's no dokusan (private meetings with a teacher) listed, so this is group practice focused on the meditation itself rather than individual instruction.

Boundless Way Zen is a Soto Zen lineage rooted in the teaching that zazen itself is practice and realization — not a means to an end. In a day-long format, you get a taste of that: sustained sitting without the intensity of a full sesshin schedule, but enough continuity to settle into it.

Practical

  • Commuter format — come for the day, return home the same evening
  • $20 suggested donation
  • Bring comfortable clothes you can sit and walk in; no special gear needed
