Outdoor Practice Day Hike
Soto Zen
A single-day outdoor zazen and walking practice with Boundless Way Zen Temple. Includes sitting meditation, a silent walk to Cascades Park, lunch, and garden reflection.
About this retreat
This is a straightforward outdoor practice day—a chance to sit zazen in the morning, then move the practice into walking meditation (kinhin) through actual woods rather than a zendo. The walk to Cascades Park is silent, which means you're applying attention to the terrain, the body in motion, and the breath while moving, rather than sitting. This shift from stillness to movement is core to Zen practice, not a break from it.
You'll bring your own lunch, sit again in the Temple Garden afterward, and presumably return by early afternoon. It's a half-day commitment—accessible to beginners, useful for people who sit regularly but want to practice outside the formal sesshin context, and genuinely different from indoor sitting. The garden reflection period suggests some time for integration rather than just hiking with zazen attached.
